Artists Amable Arias, Rafael Ruiz Balerdi, Néstor Basterretxea, Eduardo Chillida, Remigio Mendiburu, Jorge Oteiza, José Antonio Sistiaga and José Luis Zumeta form the most important and innovative constellation of Basque art. In the mid 60s, due to Franco's dictatorship, it wasn’t easy to pave a way for cultural and political creation. Because of that, all these artists united to create the Gaur Taldea and, in 1966, they introduced themselves to the public through an exhibition and a manifest, at the Barandiaran gallery (San Sebastian). Fifty years have passed since that cultural and dissident event that gathered many artists from the fields of poetry and art . They also wanted to restore a modern succession of art, a Basque school, since the Civil War and the dictatorship had forced them to give up on that project. As a consequence, other groups were also created: Emen (Biscay), Orain (Araba), Danok (Navarre) and Baita (Northern Basque Country). The desire for an avant-garde art was obvious, and the most internationally renowned representatives of that movement were Oteiza and Chillida. There were disagreements regarding the way of understanding art and its consequences in society and politics within Gaur Taldea itself and between the various groups. As a result, in the end, this group adventure ended suddenly and they closed the gallery. However, we do have the pieces from that period, and they still appeal to our imagination and sensibility in a poetic manner.
