World Puppet Festival. Sinposioa = World Puppet Festival. Sinposio = World Puppet Festival. Symposium = World Puppet Festival. Symposium
On May 28th and 29th, within the Summer Courses of EHU, this symposium was organised: El teatro de títeres de repertorio en Europa y América: la Máquina Real. Behind that title, there was an amazing set of conferences on the European and American puppet tradition and on the influence of the royal machine on them. The royal machine name was used to call the commercial puppet theatre companies that performed comedies on the same theatre stage sets that actors used. They performed continuously between 1631 and the first half of the 19th century. Their shows filled theatres as much as acting companies. Like those, the royal machines crossed the Iberian peninsula from side to side, from Lisbon to Barcelona and from Cadiz to Bilbao, in order to play comedies, dances and, of course, bullfights in their wide repertoires. Without taking into account the long existence of the royal machine, it is very difficult to understand the origin and evolution of some other puppet shows: The nativities (Laguardia, Tirisiti), La Tía Norica in Cadiz, the Bonecos from Santo Aleixo, and the puppies from Sicily and Naples or the Belgian puppets with a bar on their heads. This symposium gathered university teachers from many places in Europe who are specialised in the topic, in San Sebastian.
