After being displayed at the 1937 International Exhibition in Paris, the Guernica painting was taken to many other places; among others, to northern European countries, to the United Kingdom and to the United States of America, so that the Commission to Help Spanish Refugees could collect money. The famous New York MoMA museum canonised Picasso's painting; paradoxically, it canonised it as an icon of peace, even though it reflects the cruelty of war. The process of the symbolic inflation, the abandonment of the allegory and the metamorphosis of becoming the ‘agent’ of world peace of the Guernica painting agrees with the evolution of modern war; war is not apocalyptic any more, nor biblical, but civil: it is a war between lifestyles and policies.
