Sommarnattens leende

Sommarnattens leende (Smiles of a Summer Night), Ingmar Bergman, Sweden, 1955, 109’ OV with Spanish subtitles

A comedy of manners, love and love intrigue, about couples and ex-couples, all taking place in the course of a weekend in summer in a house in the country. It all starts when Frank mutters in his sleep, lying in bed beside his young wife Anne, the name of theatre actress, Desiree. With this saunter into the comedy of manners, Bergmann poignantly dissects the social manners and customs that pervade the circles of luxury and sophistication of the world of the theatre. Presented at Cannes in 1956, where it earned a mention for “Best Poetic Humour”.
