We believe that questions surrounding the nature and use of images in war situations and the emotions they arouse provide much food for thought (the aestheticism of politics, the enjoyment derived from witnessing destruction…), and should be discussed in the context of political problems which affect us all. Just as military fortresses once did, these images attempt to fence in and urbanise a terrain which is both physical and imaginary at the same time.

The authors who will feature in this edition present us with narrative and visual content which affords us a glimpse of certain visions of reality which have become delegitimized in the course of this process. These “Áreas ciegas” (“Blind areas”), despite the fact that they represent lost realities, have managed to distance themselves from the triumphant narrative and to avoid becoming part of the epistemological and emotional terrain from which this narrative emerges. They allow us to construct our own tale, and mean we do not have to resign ourselves to a political and economic system which acts as a self-appointed regulator, repressor, mediator, and broker which seeks to naturalise conflict and its violent effects.
