Claire Denis was asked by the producer Olivier Delbosc to make an adaptation of Fragments d’un discours amoreux by Roland Barthes (1977) and she wrote a script with the writer Christine Angot based in their own experiences. The protagonist they created is Isabelle, played by Juliette Binoche, a divorced plastic artist with a ten year daughter that we see in different encounters in a film composed by fragments of romantic relations.
