Donostiako hizkuntzak (1761-2016) = Las lenguas de Donostia (1761-2016) = The languages of San Sebastian (1761-2016) = Les langues de Donostia (1761-2016)
The San Sebastian/Donostia 2016 initiative sets out to highlight the richness, diversity and characteristics shared by European cultures and help citizens in the European Union become familiar with them. In keeping with this goal, the purpose of this initiative is to provide a historical perspective on sociolinguistic diversity in San Sebastian: A study into the linguistic situation of San Sebastian in the past (1761) and in the present (2016).
Analysing and reporting on the linguistic activity of San Sebastian over the last few centuries could prove useful in illustrating how the current situation arose. It also serves to reflect the cultural scene that the city has long been involved in from different sources: efforts have been made to place it within the European context in one way or another on numerous occasions. The dates chosen for the project have not been selected at random, as there are testimonies from the eighteenth century which reveal San Sebastian to be involved in the European cultural scene.
Throughout the investigation and the initiative to publicise it, particular focus will therefore be placed on the linguistic context of the people of San Sebastian back in 1761.
The project sets out to explore two perspectives - from a local angle, in order to underline the importance of Basque (and local culture) in history, and from a global viewpoint, in order to investigate the relationship between San Sebastian and Europe since its foundation.
