In 1982, Xabier Lete brought Gabon Txirrita to the stage. The main character in the play is the famous bertsolari Juan Manuel Lujanbio (Txirrita), who is described as «a nasty piece of work», and the plot revolves around the Court of History judging the character's adventures. To coincide with the 80th anniversary of the bertsolari's death, DSS2016EU will faithfully bring Lete's work back to the stage together with the town of Urnieta. The writer Bernardo Atxaga will also build on Xabier Lete's work on Txirrita by creating a piece of drama that will be performed during San Sebastian 2016. Atxaga's new piece will not only feature Txirrita, but also other historically significant characters from Basque society, politics and culture. In total, Gabon Txirrita will bring together three names that are a key part of Basque oral, written and musical traditions.
